Clubhouse Services

Hui Hana Pono Clubhouse is a unique program for adults with serious mental illness where they participate as members and not as patients or clients.

Clubhouse provides those suffering from serious mental illness with a safe place to reorient their lives among people who are much more understanding of their challenges as a result of mental illness.  Members receive the kind of support they could not otherwise find elsewhere.  They are treated as “members” rather than as “patients.”  They are provided opportunities to return to the mainstream of social, economic, and education experiences.  The Clubhouse programs provide opportunity for members to interact with one another in respectful ways within a safe, drug & alcohol free environment.  They are able to attend various outings such as attendance at concerts, plays, picnics, rallies, and events that provides opportunities for greater involvement in civic and social affairs.  They are given opportunities to obtain levels of employment, from part time to full time employment.  They are able to use the support of the Clubhouse program to obtain educational programs, either at the Clubhouse facility or at Adult Education facilities elsewhere.

Hui Hana Pono is modeled around the principle that every individual is a complex social, physical, spiritual, mental, cultural and intellectual person who needs to be appreciated in all of those areas and not treated merely as a "mental health patient."  This Clubhouse continually strives to provide opportunities for its members to fulfill all of those areas of the human person.  It is located on a spacious site in the heart of Wai`anae town along a central bus route and major roadway.

The clubhouse program cultivates friendships and emphasizes the "work-ordered day."  Work and the ability to develop a sense of belonging are central ingredients in the recovery process of members challenged by serious psychological disorders.  Thus, Hui Hana Pono is not a "drop in" site or a place where members merely "hang-out."  The program is developed around active participation in one of several work areas - food service, environment, clerical, and community relations.

Community Relations (Education, Newsletter)

The goals of this program are to strengthen abilities, build skills, increase self-esteem and self-worth, and engage members in creating meaningful relationships.

Employment and Self-Sufficiency

A major aspect of Clubhouse membership is directed to providing employment training and opportunity.  In view of the current unemployment situation, it has been extremely challenging to secure employment positions within the Clubhouse program.  Hui Hana Pono has therefore set out to create within its program opportunities for employment training within its four work areas.

Eligibility

Membership is limited  to individuals with serious mental illness.  Members must be first recommended by an active case manager or case management agency accompanied by a "personal recovery program" which incorporates the Clubhouse within such recovery.  Members are first reviewed by the current membership to determine entry into the program.  A variety of financing arrangements are available to meet the cost of membership and Clubhouse services.
