| Hale Na`au Pono had an `Aha `aina (celebration-feast) on Sautrday July 24, 2004 beginning from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 87-217 St. John's Road, Ma`ili.
We often speak of the value of cultural practices in bringing about wellness. Through the use of our Native Hawaiian traditions, Hale Na`au Pono will take an important step in demonstrating such value with an `Aha `aina. An `Aha `aina provides us a foundation for incorporating traditions, language, history, and values in meaningful holistic processes for good health. This `Aha `aina will provide us an enriched cultural environment containing a multitude of cultural activities which help to nourish the emotional, physical, mental/intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of our Hale Na`au Pono community. In organizing this event, we create opportunities to touch the mauli - the cultural heart and spirit of our people. Nurturing this mauli ola or living life force supports the local cultural base from which we grow and become healthier participants within our family, community and others. From this `Aha `aina, we will be able to promote healthier individuals and strong, positive relationships among individuals, in families and communities. Working hand in hand with this process is our professional staff of mental health experts, ready to integrate the best of western knowledge within our traditional environment. This cultural approach could herald a major development in the direction of our treatment of the seriously mentally ill. The result could mean more appropriate treatment for not only the native Hawaiian population but for the overall Hawai`i population housed in our hospitals, jails and special treatment facilities around our islands. It would give a higher appreciation for the value of our Native Hawaiian culture and the opportunities for its practices in Hawai`i.
